Das Deutsche Ärzteblatt, gegründet 1872, ist ein offizielles Organ der Ärzteschaft und wird herausgegeben von der Bundesärztekammer (Arbeitsgemeinschaft der Landesärztekammern) und der Kassenärztlichen Bundesvereinigung. Es erscheint im Deutschen Ärzte-Verlag GmbH (Gründungsjahr 1949) in Köln und ist dessen auflagenstärkste Publikation.
Das Deutsche Ärzteblatt wird an alle Ärzte in Deutschland verschickt und ist somit die auflagenstärkste Medizinzeitschrift in Deutschland (2010 etwa 408.000 Exemplare wöchentlich). Das Deutsche Ärzteblatt finanziert sich nicht, wie oftmals fälschlich angenommen, durch die Kammerbeiträge der Ärzte, sondern über die Einnahmen durch Anzeigen. Neben fachlichen Übersichtsartikeln und Originalarbeiten enthält es auch standespolitische Informationen. Im Anzeigenteil finden sich ärztliche Stellenanzeigen und Praxisangebote sowie Anzeigen zu Fort- und Weiterbildungen, Reisen, Praxisorganisation und weiteren Rubriken.
Alle Artikel der Zeitung sind seit 1996 im Volltext über ein Archiv frei zugänglich. Diese Open-Access-Zeitschrift bewirbt sich damit bei den potentiellen Autoren.[1]
Seit 2007 veranstaltet das Deutsche Ärzteblatt regelmäßig Kongresse für junge Mediziner/-innen zum Thema Berufs- und Karrierechancen in verschiedenen deutschen Städten.
Seit 2008 erscheinen die wissenschaftlichen Artikel zusätzlich auf Englisch in der Online-Zeitschrift Deutsches Ärzteblatt International.[2]
